Arguably the finest adaptation of Stevenson’s much-filmed novella, this pre-Code classic explicitly links Jekyll’s troubled transformation into the monstrous Hyde to Victorian society’s oppression of his sexual desires. One of the greatest directors of the 1930s, Rouben Mamoulian employed technical innovations, superb lighting and imaginative editing to create a Gothic masterpiece; March and Hopkins, especially, rewarded him with superb performances.
