This adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s novel is a searing exploration of upper-class American society in the aftermath of the First World War. War pilot Larry leaves his friends behind to seek meaning in his life. Tierney is mesmerising as a spoiled rich woman who needs to decide between her status and love, while Anne Baxter is on Oscar-winning form in the supporting role of Sophie, a young woman who struggles to put her life back together following a personal tragedy.
