Returning from Germany to his now ruined home, a prisoner of war finds himself in a society scarred by loss, destruction and corruption, fails to get honest work and becomes a gangster. A filmmaker all too often overlooked by critics, Lattuada injected noir tension into a neorealist aesthetic. The film was a resounding success at the box office, thanks in no small part to Anna Magnani’s unusual casting as a deceitful femme fatale.
Restored in 4K by Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna from the original nitrate and soundtrack negative made available by Cristaldi Film. The restoration work was carried out by L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory with the support of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism.
